San Tan Criterium’s

A few pretty low key couple of crits this weekend up in the city of Phoenix. First was the San Tan Criterium. Since the San Dimas Race was drawing a lot of the big guns from Arizona these crits were pretty small. Saturday’s was a pretty fun course, 8 corners but super wide so not all that technical. I attacked a few laps in for a prime, I got a pretty good gap and kept thing rolling in sudo-recovery mode. The breakaway came up to me and I tagged on to the back. The group wasn’t working well together due to the large size, but after a few attacks and a few shed riders our 6 man group started working well together. It was pretty boring till the end after that. I positioned myself a little poorly in the final corner and ended up 3rd.

Ryan Cross – West Michigan rider updates

I’ve spent the last few months making the best of mother nature’s annual butt kicking. I stayed active on the mountain bike and engaged in nightly dates with my trainer and Netflix account. With a relatively light final semester at school, I was fortunate enough to have some time to make a few trips around the country to visit friends and family. I logged some long hours during my trips to Florida, Arizona and even a week long spring break trip to Northern California. I squeezed in a few training races in Florida and Arizona to boot.

Albers in SoCal

Spring Break in SoCal has become a tradition for the Albers family with the pool, beach, hikes at Torrey Pines, zoo, and LegoLand as our top destinations.

The weather is a little bit off, showers on some days with cooler temps almost every day, but with the sun out, it is hard to complain too much about riding in the North County San Diego area.  Groups rides twice a week have been on the agenda, coupled with a few longer rides – mountainous by Ohio standards – the fitness seems to be coming along at a steady rate.  Riding in this area has been great, familiarity with the wide variety of roads and catching up with the many friends I’ve made during past trips make the time on the bike fly.

I’ve still never made into the ocean, that’s Swami’s break off in the distance, some day I’ll give surfing a go…

The anticipation for the race season is running quite high, all the guys are looking forward to quite the “competitive” year.

Mac Brennan – in the UP.

I’m currently going to school at Michigan Tech which is in Houghton, MI. For those of you who don’t know where that is, it’s on the Northern tip of the Upper Peninsula. It’s pretty much as far North as you can get in Michigan. Needless to say, the winters up here up here are pretty crazy. If I had ride my trainer all winter I would probably go insane, luckily the XC skiing up here is great. Its a nice break from a long season of cycling, but now that spring is here, I’m definitely getting anxious to start riding.

Callville Bay Classic

My first big stage race of the year took place this past weekend outside of Las Vegas, NV in the Lake Mead recreation area. The Callville Bay Classic has historically attracted a small number of professional teams to the race, this year was no exception. The entire Exergy Pro Cycling team was just coming of their training camp, last years NRC champion Luis Amaran and Tyler Wren form Jamis, and a smattering of solo riders from other pro teams. The race format was 50 mile road race, 4 mile TT, 82 mile Road Race, and finally a Crit. All the races also started and finished within the Callville Bay Marina, which made it pretty easy to travel to and from.

Welcome to Team Panther 2011

Welcome to the 2011 Team Panther presented by Competitive Cyclist blog.  We have some exciting changes for the coming season for riders and sponsors. Foremost we are proud to present our title sponsor Panther Expedited Services Inc. and presenting sponsor Competitive Cyclist without whom we would not be able to reassemble this incredible team. We would also like to present our new team equipment sponsors Canyon bicycles and Zipp Speed Weaponry as well as our returning equipment sponsors SRAM components, Capo clothing and Giro helmets.

All of our new team equipment has just shown up and we are busy prepping to mail each of our riders their new bicycles and clothing. The team is riding Canyon bicycles this year built up with SRAM Force groups and S30 training wheels. For the races, the riders will all be on the new Zipp 404 Firecrest tubular wheels for an even greater aero advantage than ever before. For attire, the team is outfitted with Capo clothing and Giro helmets and sunglasses.

We have a mix of new and old riders on the elite team’s lineup this year. Returning to the lineup are Kirk Albers, Greg Christian, Ryan Knapp and Chris Uberti. New for 2011 are Ryan Aitcheson, Erik Hamilton, Mac Brennan and Ryan Cross.  As much as possible they will also be joined by our regional team riders Paul Martin, Andy Clarke, Erik Lesco and Brent Martin.

For information on team travel and events please check back to this blog for regular updates.

Rubber City

Brent, Erik and I raced the Rubber City Criterium in Akron, Ohio last Saturday.  The course was a challenging up and down 1.2 mile loop, with a 40 mph descent and a long slog uphill to the finish.  Fifteen minutes in to the hour long race I experienced a first in a race; the police stopped the race because a spectator sitting on a 100 ft. high bridge that went over the race course was threatening to jump.  Thankfully they got there in time, no one jumped and we are able to resume racing.  On restart, the race quickly split up, I ended up in a 4 man break with ex teammate Jeremy Grimm, Matt Weeks and Shawn Adams from Carbon Racing.  I was able to come off of Matt’s wheel and hold off Jeremy in the sprint for the win (barely).
