Last Saturday I was able to get my first race of the season in. I was excited to debut the new Panther kit and see how the Canyon felt at race speed. I was a little nervous though, I had been sick pretty much the whole week so I wasn’t able to ride much either. I almost didn’t race, but I’m glad I did. With only 5 people pre-registered I was surprised to see a field of at least 40 riders. IScorp had at least 5 riders and there was also a rider from Kenda/5Hour Energy so the field looked pretty strong.
The race started out pretty quick. Like me, everyone seemed excited to be racing. It didn’t take long for people to start attacking. I was feeling better than I thought I would so I followed some wheels and did a few attacks of my own to test the legs out. Off the front it was pretty clear that I was still feeling the effects of my sickness. I was having a little trouble breathing and my top end speed wasn’t really there yet. After being pretty animated the first half of the race I decided to rest up a bit. At this point a break of five formed. I didn’t really have the legs to bridge up and no one was interested in chasing. This break ended up staying away till the finish.
I ended up just finishing in the field, but I was pretty happy with how it went. I felt pretty comfortable in the field and the Canyon handled really well. With a pretty descent average speed of 27mph, I was actually pretty surprised how good I felt after being sick and not having much riding in. The weather in Houghton is starting to get pretty nice so I’m looking forward to see how I’m racing once I get some good riding in.
